With a layer of solid wood on top, but below the surface is a cheaper, softer wood. Engineered flooring looks very similar to hardwood flooring and even professionals would struggle to tell the difference. Engineered flooring tends to be cheaper. And will move less over a long period. However hardwood flooring is usually a better investment in the long term. The material does last longer and can be sanded down and re-polished several times. Whereas this is limited for engineered flooring.
